Our Pilates classes provide a supportive and welcoming environment, with exercises adapted to suit individual needs and abilities. Whether you’re looking to improve fitness, support recovery from injury or focus on your overall wellbeing, Pilates offers a safe and effective way to build strength, mobility and confidence.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates before World War II, combining 50 simple, repetitive exercises centred around what he described as ‘the Core’. These movements focus on engaging the abdominal, pelvic and shoulder girdle muscles to improve strength, flexibility and endurance, while supporting better posture and balance.
The exercises are gentle yet adaptable, making them suitable for people of all abilities, from those rebuilding general strength to elite athletes looking to improve power and endurance through increased resistance and intensity. Each exercise is based on five key principles: shoulder girdle stabilisation, controlled breathing, cervical alignment, pelvic mobility, and the activation of the transversus abdominis, multifidus and pelvic floor muscles in a controlled and coordinated way.
Pilates differs from traditional strength training by emphasising controlled movement, effective muscle activation and efficient movement patterns throughout the full range of motion. Exercises are performed with focused, rhythmic repetition to challenge the muscles and improve strength, coordination and body awareness.
Resistance is developed through body weight, repetition and changes in posture, position and limb length, allowing exercises to be adapted and progressed to suit each individual. Pilates can also support pelvic floor strength, breathing control and overall wellbeing. Sessions are typically performed on a mat, which we provide, but exercises can be modified using a chair for those who may have reduced mobility or balance concerns.
